Tommy Emmanuel - Somewhere over the Rainbow
April 27th 2008 10:47
This guy must be one of the greatest guitar players - of his generation - or quite simply ever. I know that is a very subjective comment, but is there a more rounded guitar player out there?
In what is surely not going to be the last post on Tommy, here is his version of Somewhere over the Rainbow, he makes it look efortless - but that is his way...
For the un-initiated (no pun intended... You'll get it in another post), Tommy started playing with his brother when he was about six years old and soon started listening to his hero Chet Atkins - a lot of his finger picking style and technique can be attributed to the Great Atkins.
By the age of 9 he was a professional musician. Recognizing the musical talents of Tommy and his brother Phil, their father created a family band, sold the family home and took his family on the road. With the family living in two station wagons, much of Emmanuel’s childhood was spent touring Australia with his family, playing rhythm guitar.
While Tommy has never had formal music training, his playing ability has won him fans from all over the world. He is known to play percussion parts on the body of his guitar.
Tommy has a unique style where he has learnt to play 3 guitar parts on the one guitar... Freakish... you bet! That means he can play the base line, melody and rhythm all by himself... Who needs a band - I'll do it all myself thank you very much!
The most famous of these would have to be his Beatles compilations with Lady Madonna and Day Tripper...
Put simply it is genius..

You did inspire my next post however - Edgar Cruz and classical guitar.
I really love acoustic stuff - but how do you compare that to a shredding rock solo? Impossible... They are both challenging and good in their own way.
